Joshua: World Changing Leadership Qualities


A sermon review for July 8, 2018. Here, the leadership qualities of Joshua is explored and studied. Find out how to apply Joshua's leadership qualities in your life! Sermon scripture is Joshua 24:29-31.

Joshua had an impressive influence because God was with him doing great things.  From the very beginning God's support was based upon his faithful obedience to the Word of God.  Therefore Joshua stands before us an example and role model for leadership.


Joshua 24:29-31 - It came about after these things that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.  And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timmath-serah, which is a hill country of Ephraim, on the north of Mount Gaash.  

Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, and had known all the deeds of the Lord which He had done for Israel.

Reasons for Joshua’s influence

–God with him doing great works

–His faithful obedience to God

  • An example of a great leader

–Need for good leadership

–Joshua – a role model



a.Before he was a leader, he was willing to serve

  • Exodus 24:13 - So Moses arose with Joshua his servant, and Moses went up to the mountain of God.
  • Exodus 33:11b - When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

a.Before he was a leader, he was willing to serve

b.Even as a leader, he was still willing to serve

  • Joshua 3:7 - Now the Lord said to Joshua, ‘This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you.
  • Joshua 4:14 - On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; so that they revered him, just as they had revered Moses all the days of his life.
  • Joshua 5:14-15 - I indeed come now as captain of the host of the Lord.’  And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, ‘What has my lord to say to his servant?’


a.When he spy out the land

  • Numbers 13:31 - But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us.’
  • Numbers 14:8,9 - If the Lord is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us -- a land which flows with milk and honey.  Only do not rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey. Their protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.

b.When Jericho fell

  • Joshua 6:1-5
  • Hebrews 11:30 - By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.


a.His success directly related to his adherence to the Word

  • Joshua 1:7 - Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.
  • Joshua 1:8 - “The book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.”

a.His success directly related to his adherence to the Word

b.Consistently true to the Word

  • Joshua 1:13 - Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you.
  • Joshua 8:34-35 - Then afterwards he (Joshua) read all the words of the law . . .  There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assemble of Israel . . .
  • Joshua 11:15 - Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.
  • Joshua 23:6 - Be very firm, then, to keep and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, so that you may not turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left.
  • Joshua 23:16
  • Romans 10:17
  • Joshua 1:8
  • 1 Timothy 4:13-16 - “Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.  Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying of  hands by the presbytery.
  • Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.  Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.”


a.Praying for his people’s failure

  • Joshua 7:6ff - Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.

b.Praying in the midst of war

  • Joshua 10:12 - The Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel.


a.Before the business at hand

b.Before others

  • Joshua 24:14–16 NKJV: 14 “Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”16 So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods;
